Today I'm going to talk about my top five ESL flashcard games for kids. Now honestly when I teach kids, I never go into class without a set of flash cards. It's kind of like my teaching security blanket or something. I don't know, anyway, but it's like I love flash cards. I can't get enough of them. Don't set foot into a children's ESL classroom without some flashcards and you will thank me later and you will know the power of the flash card. So anyway, here are top my top five ESL flashcard games and activities you can do with your students. The first one is concentration. So if you have like a picture and then a word, it's perfect. That will help students remember new vocabulary. So I put about 16 together and put students into groups of four. They shuffle them and place them face down on their desk. The first student will take two cards. If they match, they keep it and get a point. If it doesn't match, they put it back in the same spot and then the next student goes. So it's basically like a memory game. You probably will have to make your own flashcards for this but it's actually quite simple and there are actually like there's a ton of great stuff on the internet as well. All right, the next one, flashcard questions from the teacher. If you have a smaller class of say less than five or six students, the teacher asking questions based on the flash cards is perfect. So maybe you have a flash card of a cat. You could show it and you could say, do you have a cat? Yes, I do. Or, you could give the flash card to the student and they could ask the teacher, do you have a dog? No, I don't. Simple questions like that. Or maybe brushing your teeth, you could say, what time do you brush your teeth or how often do you brush your teeth? The next one is very similar but students go together. So in pairs, give them a stack of flashcards and they have to ask yes-no questions based on what they see on the flashcard. Maybe, do you like soccer? Yes, I do. What time do you go to bed? I go to bed at 8pm. Something like that so it can really be used for just about anything so yeah use your discretion but yes-no questions are perfect for that. The next one is secret words. So this works really well for smaller classes. You can play together as a class but in bigger classes, you can play maybe in groups of like five or six. So there's one captain at the front of the class and they have a set of flash cards but they can't see them. I would hold the flash card in front of me. All the people in the class or the other five or six people in my group could see the flashcard and they have to give me hints and then I have to guess what the flash card is. So you can make it into a big elaborate game with rounds and different teams and that kind of thing, or it can just be like a fun thing for students in their group. All right, the next one is 20 questions. So this is a really ideal way to play 20 questions but not let it get out of control. For example, there's always the kid who's going to choose like an armadillo or whatever. That one random animal that nobody in the class knows and then it's going to be so frustrating and people will be angry and whatever so I generally combat this by giving the person who has the secret thing, I give them a flash card based on whatever we are studying. So maybe it's a job or animals or just whatever. If it's an animal that they see and it's a giraffe and then they know that that's their secret thing and then students have to ask 20 questions or 20 guesses to figure out that it is a giraffe. Alright so that's it, those are my flashcard games for kids.

Today I'm going to talk about the top five ESL prepositions of place games and activities for kids. Prepositions are things like in, on, under, beside, and next to. There are a whole bunch of them. The first one I like to do is a memory game. I flash up a picture on the screen with various objects that would lead to preposition usage. I give students maybe one to two minutes to study the picture. I don't let them take notes and then at the end of the minute, I take down the image and I ask questions. For example, where's the ball? And the students would have to write, the ball is on the desk or something like that, for example. You can adapt it based on the level of your students. For lower level, you could just say, is the ball on the desk or under the desk? And students can just write on or under. Just one word. Higher-level students can write the entire sentence quite easily. The next one: is that sentence correct. This is similar in that there's an image on the screen and then I ask students questions. For example, is the boy next to his mom? Yes, he is. Or, no he isn't. Or, where is the ball? They could write the ball is on the desk, something like that. This isn't a memory game so it's a little bit easier than the previous one. The next one-information gap activities (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=quJnHU7HWCA&t=32s). They are perfect for prepositions of place. This is when one student has half the information, and the other student has the other. The classic one is that there is a city map and this student has the bank and the fire hall and the school and the bakery and they have to talk to each other to find out the complete set of information and write it all down. They'd have to ask questions like, where's the bank? Where's the school? The school's next to the bank, etc. Things like that. The next one is concentration. So this is a really good one for beginners. Write down the word in and then show a picture of something in. And then on, plus a picture of something on. Cut up the cards, and put students into groups of four. They arrange them on their desks in an organized fashion, maybe about 12 to 16 of them. Four students in a group. The first student uncovers two cards. If they match, they keep it. If they don't match, they put them back in the same spot and then the next student goes. Continue on until all the cards are gone. You can mix it up and even play again if you want as well. The next one is picture prompt (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=5dPDFKzCVj8). So this is a really nice warm-up one to introduce prepositions of place. Flash up a picture on the screen that leads to preposition usage and then just ask some leading questions like, where's the boy? He's in the park. Who is he with? He's with his mom. Why is he always next to his mom? Okay, so you can just ask questions like that to elicit the target information that you want. That's it for prepositions of place activities for kids.

Today, I'm going to talk about how to teach ESL children new words, so basically teaching English vocabulary to people who are ESL or EFL learners. There are a few different methods. First of all, with kids, I like to have a picture or the real object if possible and then I say the word, I spell the word, I get them to look at the picture, look at the word, repeat after me. You can also do a translation into the original language but that is a little bit fraught with some complications because there are sometimes multiple translations and I don't necessarily want my students to just always think automatically of translating everything from English into their first language. It's often better if you're teaching students like classroom objects, pen, pencil, paper to actually have pen, pencil, paper, so they're kind of learning English through English without having to translate into Korean or Mandarin or whatever language they speak. The next thing once you teach them the basic words and the spelling and they've said them a few times, you need to do some practice. So there are a ton of ways you can get students to practice. I love using flashcards. There are a ton of games and activities you can use with flashcards as simple as showing the flashcard and the student says the word or they make a sentence with that word. Sometimes I like to hide them around the classroom and I say go find the ball and then they have to get the ball and hold it up and say ball or I touch the object and then they have to pick up the card and then say the word. Yeah, so there are a lot of different things you can do with that. The next one I like to do is concentration. So this is a really fun game that kids love so I put the spelling of the word ball: b-a-l-l and then a picture of the ball on the other card and I make up about eight sets, so 16 cards total. I shuffle the cards, I place them face down on the desk in kind of an organized fashion and then the first student has to take two cards. If it's a match, ball and ball they keep it if it's not a match they put it back in the same spot and then the next student goes. So it basically becomes a memory game. The next one is charades. So this is perfect if you're talking about like say verbs, especially like playing soccer, eating pizza, doing homework, things like that. So getting students to act it out and then the other students in the class have to guess what they're doing. All right, my next tip is to review. So it takes about 20 or 30, 50, 100 times for people to actually know a word in a second language so they have to be exposed to it that many times before it becomes just automatic in their brain such that they're never going to forget. You can really help your students out with this process by reviewing frequently in class. I love to start each new class with a review of what I taught in the previous class. I love to have monthly review sessions. I review before the midterm exam, and before the final exam. One thing you can try doing, depending on where you're teaching is a vocabulary test so I mean I sometimes love it and sometimes don't love it, depending on the situation. However, nothing actually gets people to remember words as much as a test will. I find if you give students a vocabulary list of say 20 or 30 words and say there is going to be a test in the next class, you have to memorize these words and how to spell them. Then they come to class and I find that most students actually will have remembered those words. All right, if you like these tips for how to teach children new words in a second language, please check out my book 39 ESL Vocabulary Activities for Kids. You can find it easily on Amazon. So today I'm going to talk about my favourite parts of the body ESL activities and games. So if you're teaching kids, parts of the body is a very common topic. Hands, arms, eyes, knees, mouth, etc. So here are some of my favourite activities for teaching students this. My first one is fly swatter. If you want to create some fun and excitement in your classroom, nothing does that better than flyswatter. So get two fly swatters and then on the whiteboard write a bunch of words like hand, mouth, knee, eye, ear, etc. just in kind of a random fashion. And then divide the class into two teams and one student from each team comes up to the board and then I give hints about a word. So I would say like, I have two of them and that might eliminate a bunch of the things but there would still be hands, eyes, feet, etc. left. And then I would give another hint—I have toes on them and then the first student to slap feet would get one point for their team and then the two students would go sit down. Then other students from each team would come up and I'd go until every student has had a chance to play. You can either leave all the words there the same or if some student says feet, for example, then I erase it and then I can put a new word in. So it's up to you. It kind of depends on the level of students and how many vocabulary words you want to target in that. All right, the second one is hot potato. So this is also another one that creates kind of some fun and excitement in your TEFL classes. So basically students have to pass around a potato. It can be like any soft object. I don't recommend hard objects because it creates a lot of like chaos and disaster but they pass around the object and then you can play some music and then when the music stops whoever is holding that object has to do something. In this case, I would if for very, very beginners, I would point to like something like this and then that students would have to say it's a nose or I would give some hints. I would show a flashcard, something like that just to basically get students to say the body part either in a sentence or just the word by itself if very, very low level. All right, the next one—the a to z alphabet game. So it's often the case that students have seen many body part words before. If this is the case, it can help students to activate their prior knowledge by doing this a to z game. Basically, I will write down on the board the alphabet: a b c d e f g, all the way down to zed. And then I get students to shout out words they know, for example, hand, eyes, feet, and then I fill it in in the relevant spot and I challenge them to try to get one body part for each letter. It's not really possible because of course what body part starts with x or even z. The next one is what Simon says. Of course, you know what Simon says. I'm sure you've played it before when you were a kid so you can do this to teach students body parts. Just make sure you have enough space and explain the rules clearly before you do it. The next one is songs and chants, so head and shoulders knees and toes is kind of the most obvious one you can do. However, if you look on YouTube, there are million and one songs and chats that are designed to teach body part names to kids so have a look even if you're not musical like me. I'm actually terrible at singing but not to worry, YouTube will help you out with that for sure. Today i'm going to talk about my top five ESL vocabulary activities. My number one vocab activity is concentration. This is basically a matching memory game. Make up matching sets of cards. There are various options. You can put the word and a picture word definition, yeah, whatever you want depending on the level. And then make up sets for every group of four students and they can put the cards face down, mixed up, face down on a table and then the first student can choose two cards. If they match, they keep them and get a point and go again. If they don't match, they put them down in the same spot. The game can continue until all the cards are gone. The next one is word association (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=BTDWlRTYfHA&t=3s). This vocabulary activity is perfect if you are teaching about hobbies or sports, weather, etc. These are topics that are super common in ESL textbooks and that you think your students have probably studied before. Write down weather on the board or sports or whatever it is and then kind of make a mind map. Just get students to shout out words and then you can kind of group them by categories. The next one is dictogloss (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=3F-IkZZqvFM). This is a classic ESL listening activity that's also great for vocabulary. Find or write a passage with lots of the target vocabulary in it. Then put students into pairs and they should each have a pen and paper. Read it out at a faster than normal pace for the level of the student and then they can each take notes. They want to recreate what they've heard. That's the ultimate goal so after you read it out, students can compare what they have with their partner and then read it out again and students can take notes again and then compare. And finally, in the end, they should have something that looks quite similar to the original passage. The next one is flyswatter (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=488eabHRk0E). This is a really fun game for kids. You need to have two flyswatters and divide the team into two teams and then write down a bunch of vocab words on the board, on the whiteboard. And then one student from each team comes up to the board and each of them has a fly swatter. Then I will give hints about that word. For example, if it's soccer, I'll say this is a sport played with a ball. There are 11 people on each team and then they should get it so they would attempt to beat the other person by hitting soccer first with their flyswatter. And then I erase that word and then I'll add a new word into that spot and then someone else from the team can come up and play. The final esl vocabulary activity is odd one out (https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=80vtLosY1JA&). So this is a nice one for working on vocabulary but also reasoning and yeah, some critical thinking skills. Write down four words. For example, apple, orange, banana, carrot. Students have to find the odd one out and tell you why. So in this case it would be carrot because it's a vegetable. I will allow any answer as long as students are able to support it. There are some more subtle ones. That's it for my ESL vocab activities. It's called flip chart. So you could have a chart or a notebook or even just pieces of A4 paper and write up a bunch of the target vocabulary that you want to review. Then I divide the class into two teams and one person from the first team comes and sits on a chair at the front of the class. They're facing their classmates and then I stand behind that person with the flip chart with the words on it. I hold up the first word so that their teammates can see it and then their teammates have to describe that word to the person sitting in the chair and that person has to guess what the word is. You can do it in a couple different ways. Sometimes I like to do rounds of one minute and then they'll try to get as many words as possible in that one minute. Or sometimes I use a timer and then I time how long it took that team to describe that word to that person. Do a few different rounds and then the winner is the team with the most points at the end of the rounds. Okay, so that is it. That is a very, very simple vocabulary review activity called flip chart. If you want some more ideas, be sure to check out my book 101 ESL Activities for Adults. I'll put the link up there and please hit like, subscribe, leave a comment and tell me how you like to review vocabulary with your students. Okay bye, everybody.
