If you want to avoid fighting angry children, complaining children, I recommend having some of these road trip games. The first one is a classic: I spy. I spy with my little eye something that is green or whatever color you choose and the other people in the car have to make guesses about what it is. Okay, the next game you can play is: 20 questions. I'm sure you've played this before, but you can think about a secret person place or thing and then the other people have up to 20 Questions yes-no questions to try to figure out what it is. For little kids you can even narrow it down to 10 questions and it can maybe be a secret animal or a secret job or something like that. The next game you can play is a treasure hunt. Think of three things, for example: a blue car an animal and then a car with a child in it and the first person to spot all three of those things is the winner and they can think of something for the other people to do as a treasure hunt. All right, the next game is: "I'm going on a picnic". I would say "I'm going on a picnic and I'm gonna bring a book what do you want to bring?" and the other people in the car can make guesses about what they want. In my case it has to have a double letter. If someone says something that has a double letter, they can come with me. But if it's something else I say "sorry, you can't come". Keep going until everyone has figured out your secret rule. The next game you can play is: "name that place". You can get creative. If you see a hill you could say "the dark and foreboding hill" or if you see a lake you could say "oh there's a Lake of shimmering ice" or something like that. So just give very creative names to all the things that you see. The first one is the candy jar. Get a clear plastic or glass jar and fill it up with a bunch of candies that are Christmas-colored. For example, Christmas jelly beans, Christmas jujube, something like that. The key thing is to count how many you put in as you're putting them in. Record the number somewhere secret and then seal up the top and bring it to class. Every student that you teach gets one guess about how many candies are in that jar and then the winner gets to take the whole thing home. The second Christmas game for kids is door decorating. I love to do this class by class. So each class gets to decorate a door in the school and then I get some of that administration at my school to be the judge, for example, the principal and maybe the counsellor or something like that can go classroom to classroom and choose the door that they think is the best. The third Christmas game is Christmas Bingo. So I put up on the PowerPoint maybe 30 or 40 different Christmas-themed words and then students have to fill in their bingo board with whatever words they want, in whatever random fashion that they want. I recommend having a lot of words so it just adds a bit of variety to the game and makes it a little bit longer and then we play Bingo. But instead of just saying the word, I want to level up the difficulty a little bit by describing the word. For example, if one of the words is Rudolph, I won't just say Rudolph but I will say he is a reindeer with a very special nose and then students will have to say. . . Rudolph. And then they can cross off Rudolph. The next games are charades and Pictionary using Christmas vocabulary or expressions or idioms. Charades is when you act out and Pictionary is when you draw it out. Two teams can compete against each other and see who the winner is. My final game is pin the nose on Rudolph. I'm sure you've played pin the tail on the donkey. This is the same but you're pinning the red nose on Rudolph. Those are my top five Christmas games for kids. Leave a comment and tell me what you like to do with your students around the holidays.
