Tongues Twisters

Tongue twisters can be a fun activity, but they are also widely used as a method of English speaking exercise. There are many ways to improve English pronunciation. Some pronunciation training and drilling activities include consonant exercise, vowel exercise, homograph exercise, and tongue twisters.

What are tongue twisters?

A tongue twister is a phrase or sentence that is designed to be tricky to say correctly. It is even more difficult when you try to say it quickly and repeatedly. Most tongue twisters are made up of alliteration (repetition of words that sound very similar) and consonant clusters.

The goal of tongue twisters is to make you pronounce each word clearly and precisely. Because these sentences are designed to be tricky, you might feel like your tongues get twisted. And that’s why it’s called tongues twisters!

Tongue twisters are very helpful in improving dictation and pronunciation skills. Good pronunciation is important for good communication skills. Especially if you are an ESL student trying to take an English speaking exam like IELTS, you will want to practice with tongue twisters.
