#1: Picture Prompt

The ultimate my house activity! Show students a picture of a busy house with lots of rooms and common objects that you might find. Elicit from students what they can see. It’s a nice way to find out what students know, and don’t know before diving into new materials. Have a look:

ESL Picture Prompt.

#2: Disappearing Text

Write a sentence on the board related to rooms in my house vocabulary. For example, “In the kitchen, I can find a stove, fridge, and dishwasher.”

Then, have the students read it out loud together. Erase a word or two. Students have to say the entire sentence again. Continue until there are no words but students are still staying the sentence. Learn more:

#3: I’m an Alien and Rooms of the House

This is a fun thing to do with kids who you suspect already know a good bit of vocabulary related to rooms in a house. Pretend that you’re an alien who knows nothing about how people on Earth live. Then, have students explain all about it! It’s a genius way to elicit a ton of vocabulary!

I’m an Alien ESL Activity.

#4: Flyswatter Game

#6: Rooms in the House Board Game

It’s so easy to make your own review board games! Fill up the board with hints like:

  • Name 3 things I can find in a bathroom.
  • Where do you like to relax at your house?

Learn more about doing your own games here:

Make Your Own ESL Board Games.

ESL Apples to Apples.

#9: Flip Chart Review Game

#10: Use Realia

A fun prop for a rooms of the house is realia. Of course, it’s not practical to bring in a bed or couch but you can bring in some small things that you might find in each room of the house. For example, a stuffed animal (bedroom), cup (kitchen) and tube of toothpaste (bathroom).

Have students talk about the items and where they might find them. Then, they can list some other items that they might find in those rooms.

#11:Use the Test-Teach-Test Approach

Unless students are absolute beginners, it’s likely that they already know some room of the house vocabulary. In this situation, I like to use the TTT approach to find out what students already know and focus on what they don’t. Learn more about this approach:

Test Teach Test Approach ESL.

#12: Word Association

Come up with some fun would you rather questions related to living in a house and have students discuss them with a partner. For example:

  • Would you rather hang out in the living room or your bedroom?
  • Would you rather clean the kitchen or bathroom?

#14: Show and Tell

This is a simple activity where students can think about their favourite room in their house. Then, they have to bring a small object from home from that room and talk about the object, along with the room.
