TOEIC Speaking Test Samples: Improve your TOEIC Score

Do you teach TOEIC speaking? Then keep on reading for some TOEIC speaking test samples that you can use with your students. Or, if you’re an English learner looking to improve your score, then you’re also in the right place. We have all the tips and tricks you need for TOEIC speaking.

TOEIC Speaking Sample Test

Here are some TOEIC speaking style tests that I’ve used in my own speaking exam preparation classes. You can use them in order to do a pre and post evaluation of your students. They also lend themselves well to teaching ESL online.

Here’s how you can use this sample TOEIC speaking test. Administer sample #1 to your students on the first day of your course. Then, complete the course and give a similar test (sample #2 for example) on the last day. Compare scores and hopefully your students will have improved!

They can also be used as very simple level tests for your speaking or conversation classes, if you’re required to do them by your school. You can sometimes find them in popular ESL textbooks, but if you can’t, this is a nice alternative. If you want some help with evaluation, check out this ESL Speaking Rubric that I use in my own classes.

Or, if you’re a student, you may want to use them to prepare for your speaking exam. Better yet, do it with a friend or get a teacher to check your answers for you.

TOEIC Speaking Test Tips

If you want to improve your score on this English proficiency exam, here are some of the tips you’ll need to pay close attention to:

  • Work with an experienced private tutor, or join a reputable preparation class.
  • Speak as clearly as possible (loudly and clearly).
  • There is no examiner. You’ll be using headphones and speaking into a microphone so get used to speaking by yourself during practice sessions.
  • There may be background noise from other test-takers in the room so practice in a room with the radio or TV on.
  • Don’t use English slang.
  • Use correct grammar.
  • Avoid boring words like nice, good or bad. Think of more interesting things to say and show a nice vocabulary range!
  • Use specific words instead of vague ones like “good.”
  • Vary your voice tone so that you don’t sound like a robot.
  • Speak slowly but not too slowly. Aim for a nice average pace.

What Does the TOEIC Speaking Test Consist Of?

The TOEIC Speaking test is a component of the TOEIC (Test of English for International Communication) exam. It assesses an individual’s ability to communicate effectively in spoken English within various everyday work-related situations. The test measures a range of skills including pronunciation, vocabulary, grammar, and coherence.

The TOEIC Speaking test consists of several tasks that evaluate different aspects of speaking proficiency. While the exact format may vary depending on the version of the TOEIC exam you are taking, here is a general overview of the tasks you might encounter in a TOEIC Speaking sample test.

TOEIC Speaking Tasks

  1. Read Aloud: You will be provided with a text, and you need to read it aloud. This task assesses your pronunciation, intonation, and overall oral fluency.
  2. Describe a Picture: You will be presented with a picture and asked to describe it in detail. This evaluates your ability to provide information, use descriptive language, and organize your thoughts coherently.
  3. Respond to Questions: You will listen to questions related to various workplace situations and provide spoken responses. This measures your ability to give relevant answers concisely.
  4. Respond to a Prompt: You will receive a spoken prompt and need to respond accordingly. This task assesses your ability to express opinions, give reasons, and provide examples.
  5. Propose a Solution: You will listen to a problem and be asked to propose a solution. This evaluates your ability to suggest ideas, explain your reasoning, and make recommendations.
  6. Express an Opinion: You will listen to a statement and be required to express your opinion on the topic. This task assesses your ability to give clear opinions and support them with reasons.

It’s important to note that the TOEIC Speaking test is typically administered through a computer, and your responses are recorded and later evaluated by raters. It’s advisable to practice these types of tasks beforehand to become familiar with the format and improve your spoken English skills. Keep in mind that the TOEIC exam is widely used by businesses and organizations to assess English language proficiency in a workplace context.
