IELTS Speaking Questions Part 3 Tips

In order to get the highest score possible on part 3 of the IELTS speaking exam, here are a few tips:

  • Liberally use idioms, phrasal verbs, collocations, and slang if you want to score in the highest bands.
  • Think of it as a 2-way conversation between you and the examiner. Give some detail in your answers but allow some pauses so the examiner can ask you another question.
  • Generally, give a direct answer to the question and then 1-2 more details.
  • Use a variety of grammatical structures.
  • You can ask the examiner to repeat a question if you don’t understand what they’re asking.
  • Don’t be afraid to show your personality or give an opinion about something.

In IELTS speaking part 3, the examiner will ask further questions related to the topics from part 2. It is a two-way discussion with the examiner. It is a chance for you to give a more in-depth response about the topic.

How long is part 3 IELTS Speaking?

IELTS Speaking part 3 takes about 4 to 5 minutes. Be prepared to answer around 4 to 6 questions. The examiner may ask pre-scripted questions or impromptu follow-up questions based on your last response.

How long should IELTS Speaking part 3 answers be?

There is no word limit for answering IELTS Speaking part 3 questions. However, you want to make sure to keep your answers not too long or not too short. If the answer is too short, you won’t be able to give an adequate answer. On the other hand, if your response is too long, there is a high chance of going off-topic and missing the point. Therefore, try to keep your response 3 to 4 sentences long.
