Fun Last Day of School Activities

Let’s get into the best last day of school ideas for all ages. Have some fun and say goodbye to your students! Not sure what to do on the last day of class? Look no further than these 20+ ideas.

#1: Make a Memory Book

Who doesn’t like to have some great memories from their school year, right? Students can:

  • Write down their favourite memory of the year.
  • Draw a picture of the classroom.
  • Get some friends to sign a page and leave a short message.
  • Write down some memories from their favourite field trip.

#2: Classroom Awards

Come up with some fun categories like the following:

  • Best lunches.
  • Funniest classmate.
  • Kindest person.
  • Most likely to make lots of money.
  • Most athletic.
  • A great friend.
  • Most willing to share.
  • Likes to help others.
  • Asks the most questions!
  • Etc.

Then, have students nominate their classmates, print up some certificates and have a small ceremony. Ideally, each student would get one so it can often be best to have the nominations before the last day of school so you have time to organize this.

#3: Think about Next Year on the Last Day of School

A nice activity is to have students think about what their next year will look like. They can draw or write things like:

  • Who they think their teacher will be.
  • What they think they might learn.
  • Some goals that they have.
  • If anything will change at their house.

#4: Vocabulary Auction Last Day of School Game

This is a sentence-building activity that requires a bit of preparation time but it’s totally worth it! In groups, students have to bid on words that they think will help them make a sentence. Then, there’s a trading time amongst the groups. Finally, the team that is able to make the most complete sentences is the winner.

Sounds like one of the best last day activities? It is! Have a look here:

Vocab Auction.

#5: Cleaning the Classroom on the Last Day of School

The last day of school is a nice opportunity to get some help cleaning the classroom! I recommend doing this before a more “fun” activity like a class party or movie. Give each small group of students a task, put some fun music on and get to work. Students can do things like:

  • Empty the trash.
  • Take out the recyling.
  • Wipe the tops of their desks.
  • Clean out the inside of desks.
  • Sweep or mop.
  • Clean the windows.
  • Organize a bookshelf.

#6: Movie Day!

This is a classic last day of school idea that students love. I like to level up and have students submit some ideas for what they’d like to see and then we vote on it as a class. Bring in some popcorn in small bags for each student and they can bring some other snacks from home.

#7: Trivia and Riddle Day

Have some fun with trivia! It’s easy to make it into a competition with teams and one ultimate winner in the end. For trivia for kids, you’ll definitely want to check out this book:

501 Riddles and Trivia Questions for Children.

#8: Have a Class Party on the Last Day of Class

I love to have a class party on the last day. Snacks, games, movies, etc. If you teach teenagers or adults, you can even get them to plan their own party. Have a look here:

Task-Based Learning Activities.

#9: Autograph Book

This is one of my favourite last day of school activities for elementary school students. Have them make a small book with a colourful cover and a few fun drawings in it to depict their school year. Then, allow some time for students to collet autographs and messages from the other students.

#10: Summer Fun

Have students talk or write about their plans for the summer and share them with the class. If some students say that they don’t have any plans yet, they can talk about some of their favourite things they like to do such as go swimming or just watch TV for hours.

#11: Basketball Game Challenge

This activity is designed as a vocabulary or grammar learning one, but you can also use it as a kind of quiz show. Have a look here at this active, creative idea that’s a fun last day of class game:

ESL Basketball Challenge.

#12: Last Day of School Outdoor Games

If it’s a nice day, why not have students go outside and play some games? There are some classics like ultimate frisbee, hide & seek, capture the flag, kick the can, kickball, etc.

This is a nice option for last day of school activities for middle school students.

#13: Treasure Hunt or Scavenger Hunt

This is a nice team-based activity that works really well for older students who are able to leave the classroom unsupervised. Give students a list of things they should find or take pictures of. The winner is the team to complete all of this the most quickly.

#14: Thank You Notes

Have students make some thank you notes to other people in the school like the principals, librarian, secretaries, etc. I like to put students into small groups, assign them a person and have them make one big card together. Then, all the students in each class can sign each one. After that, deliver them.

#15: The Typhoon Last Day of School Game

This is a trivia kind of game that students of all ages really enjoy. It’s one of the most fun last day of school activities to consider using in your class. It’s kind of like Jeopardy but with a bit more excitement due to the special squares and disasters that can happen. Find out more about it here:

Typhoon Game.

#16: Board Games, Card Games, or Puzzles

I love to play board games in real life and I love teaching my students to play them as well. Bring in some age-appropriate card or board games and students can play together in small groups. Look at thrift stores for some cheaper options for games that you won’t worry too much about.

#17: 20 Questions for the Last Day of Class

This is a classic game that helps students work on their reasoning and deduction skills. It’s fun to play in small groups or with the entire class. It’s a nice way to kill some time on the last day of school for sure! Find out more about it:

20 Questions.

#18: A Spelling Bee

This requires a bit of work but it’s a nice activity for the last day of class. Use words that you’ve taught students during the year from reading books, etc. Of course, have a small prize for the winners.

#19: Time-Filler Games and Activities

Have a bit of time to kill during the last day of school? Here are some of my favourite ways to fill the time! Check them out:

Time-Filler Games.

#20: Paper Airplane Contest

I love to let students design their own paper airplanes and then have a contest to see who can fly the furthest. This is best if you have a big space like a gym that you have access to. This is one of my favourite last day of school activities for middle school.

#21: Egg Drop Contest on the Last Day of School

This is a fun project if you’re able to get up to a high space at your school like the roof. You’ll also need some assistance on the ground for “crowd control” while dropping the eggs.

Each group of students gets one egg and they have to design something that will protect it well when dropped from a height. Students love doing this and it makes one of the best last day activities for all ages, even adults.

#22: The Tallest Tower

Have some fun on the last day of school! Bring in a bunch of materials, put students in groups and then they have to build the tallest tower possible in a certain amount of time. I will generally measure after a certain amount of time like 10 minutes so that you know the structures are stable and it doesn’t matter who you measure first or last.

#23: A Silly or Fun Debate

There are lots of silly, funny or controversial debate topics to create some great discussions on the last day of school. Choose a fun topic or two and have students share their opinions. This is a light-hearted way to have some great discussions. Find out the best ideas here:

Fun Debate Topics.

#24: Hot Potato Game for the Last Day of School

#25: Make Ice Cream

Something that I loved doing when I was a kid was making homemade ice cream. It’s easy to do with students and it’s ideal for those hot spring summer days as you approach summer vacation. Look online for some recipes and tips for how to do it.
